Speaking on Monday Night Football, broadcast from 7pm on 7th December, Craig Bellamy was full of praise for Newcastle United duo Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijnaldum for their performance against Liverpool.
The duo played key roles in Sunday’s win over the Reds, with the Dutchman creating one goal and scoring the other in the eventual 2-0 victory.
It was arguably Newcastle’s most impressive performance of the season so far, in what has been a highly disappointing campaign under Steve McClaren.
Their displays this season have seen several stars come in for criticism for a lack of effort, but Bellamy was keen to praise the key duo for their endeavours in this game.
“For me, they just went back to basics,” he told Monday Night Football.
“The wingers, Wijnaldum, Sissoko, the shift they put in was remarkable. Newcastle worked extremely hard for this win. It was brilliant from Newcastle I thought they were outstanding."
Even though the win was a big one for the Magpies, they will know that the fight against relegation is far from over.
The three points were not enough to take them clear of the bottom three, with them now still sitting in 18th position in the table, just one point ahead of Sunderland in 19th.
They are now, however, level on points with Bournemouth in 17th, while they are only two points away from Chelsea in 14th, meaning it is possible to climb the table at a rapid rate if a positive run can be pieced together.
