Wijnaldum, Thauvin and more: Newcastle players react to 2-0 victory against Liverpool

Newcastle United overcame Liverpool in impressive fashion on Sunday.

Newcastle United fans finally had something to cheer about at the weekend when their side overcame Liverpool 2-0 at St James’ Park.

Summer signing Georginio Wijnaldum played a major role in both goals, his 69th minute shot deflecting in off Martin Skrtel’s knee before the Dutchman eased the home side’s nerves with a second in the final moments.

The victory was essential for a Newcastle side that was floundering in the Premier League’s bottom three with the halfway stage of the campaign drawing ever closer.

There is still a lot of work to do for the Magpies and their manager Steve McClaren but this win will give Newcastle a huge confidence boost before the challenges yet to come.

After the match a number of Newcastle’s players took to Twitter to celebrate the win, including star-man Wijnaldum himself.

“What an amazing day,” he wrote. “We’ve got the three points. I’m proud of the team.”

Moussa Sissoko, Siem de Jong, Florian Thauvin, Rob Elliot and Chancel Mbemba also rushed to social media to express their delight, while young defender Kevin Mbabu joked that Wijnaldum had scored one and a half goals on the day.
