Former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United manager Harry Redknapp suggested on social networking site Twitter on Sunday afternoon that Liverpool can win the Premier League title this season.
Redknapp made the comments before Liverpool’s league encounter against Newcastle United away from home at St. James’ Park.
Liverpool have got a chance this year. Amazing result at Southampton the other night. The league is wide open.— Harry Redknapp (@Redknapp) December 6, 2015
Liverpool headed into the game against Newcastle as favourites, but they lost their winning run.
The Reds suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Magpies at St. James’ Park, thanks to an own goal from Martin Skrtel and a late strike from Georginio Wijnaldum.
The result leaves Liverpool seventh in the Premier League table with 23 points from 15 matches, nine points behind leaders Leicester City.
Arsenal are two points behind Leicester in second place, while Manchester City and Manchester United are a point behind the Gunners in third and fourth respectively.
Liverpool’s main objective this season is to finish in the top four of the Premier League, and a nine-point gap may be too much to overhaul.
Arsenal, City and United have better teams than the Reds, who should probably concentrate on finishing fourth this campaign.
Stranger things have happened in football, but it will be a surprise if the Premier League winners are not Arsenal, City or United.
