Steve McClaren names Newcastle United's two hardest working players against Liverpool

Newcastle United picked up an impressive 2-0 victory over Liverpool earlier today.

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren has told the Chronicle that Georginio Wijnaldum and Moussa Sissoko were his side’s two hardest working players against Liverpool.

Wijnaldum and Sissoko were deployed down either flank against the Reds, and they were required to do a lot of defensive work, as well as get forward in support of the front-two.

The pair both performed their roles admirably against the Reds, and McClaren moved to praise them both after watching his side win 2-0.

“There’s always a plan,” McClaren stated. “When you lose it goes wrong but today we talked about the work rate. The two hardest working players in our system have to be Wijnaldum and Sissoko and they were.

“We’ve come to this position for the third time where you think: Come on the penny has dropped. We know what we have to do. You’d like to say this is the start but we’ve got to maintain it. For 24 hours we’ll enjoy it.”

Wijnaldum played a vital role in both of Newcastle’s goals against Liverpool, and further enhanced his reputation.

The Dutch international created Newcastle’s first, when his shot was diverted into his own net by Martin Skrtel, and he then showed great composure to seal the victory late on.

Wijnaldum has already made a huge impressive at St. James’ Park, and he is rapidly on his way to becoming a fans’ favourite after arriving in the summer transfer window.

Sissoko, on the other hand, has received a lot of criticism from Magpies supporters for his performances of late, but he showed his class this afternoon.

The Frenchman was a constant threat throughout the contest, and he will win his detractors around with more performances of a similar quality.
