Steve McClaren admits Newcastle United's squad allow their confidence to be knocked

Newcastle United are currently in 18th place in the Premier League table after making a poor start to their season.

Steve McClaren has admitted to the Sunderland Echo that his Newcastle United team are guilty of allowing their confidence to be knocked too easily.

The Magpies have made a poor start to the season, and they are currently sat inside the relegation zone.

McClaren believes that part of the reason for this is because of the lack of experience in his group.

The former England boss claims that Newcastle’s fragile confidence was even on display at the weekend, although they put in an excellent performance to beat Liverpool 2-0.

He said: “They’re young, and at times confidence can be knocked and drained easily. You saw that at the beginning when we were a little nervous.

“But we came through that and got stronger, and the second half was great.

“In terms of me personally, it just saves me from banging my head against the wall and wondering what to do the next week.”

If Newcastle were low on confidence against Liverpool, they made up for it with their determination to beat Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Magpies put in a formidable defensive performance against the Reds, and they also took their chances, as they claimed an important three points.

Newcastle had played awfully in their last two matches – against Crystal Palace and Leicester City – but their win over Liverpool should relieve some of the pressure on them.

Newcastle’s next match comes against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, and if they are able to avoid defeat at White Hart Lane, they could move out of the relegation zone.
