Speaking to talkSPORT, former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has explained why the Reds cannot win the Premier League, saying that they lack in areas when compared to potential league winning teams.
Collymore said: “Liverpool have a great attacking unit. I’m not convinced at left full-back, not convinced by the two central defenders, [and] not convinced by the goalkeeper.”
Collymore has been impressed with the attacking players that Jurgen Klopp can call upon, but he is less than impressed with a number of the defensive players.
Aside from right-back Nathaniel Clyne, the entire Liverpool back-five have come under criticism from Collymore.
He does not believe goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is good enough, and has doubts about left-back, and the central defensive positions.
Alberto Moreno has established himself as first choice left-back under Klopp, but he is still a question as a defensive player, despite his strengths as an attacking wing-back.
Mamadou Sakho is undoubtedly the best central defender in the Liverpool squad, but whilst he is out injured, neither Martin Sktel nor Dejan Lovren are reliable or consistent enough to play for a potential title-winning side.
Sakho would walk into many other Premier League teams, but whilst he is out of action, the back-up for him is extremely poor.
Klopp has had an amazing impact at Anfield since being appointed head coach, but for all his good work, he is still working with a squad that is lacking real quality throughout.
Until Klopp has had a chance to build a team in his view utilising the transfer market, the Merseyside club will continue to struggle in the search for a first ever Premier League title.
