Sam Allardyce happy with Sunderland's squad depth

Sunderland put in an excellent performance, despite losing 3-1 to Arsenal at the weekend.

Sam Allardyce has told the Sunderland Echo that he is happy with the depth of quality in Sunderland’s squad.

The Black Cats were without Lee Cattermole, Jermain Defoe and Sebastian Larsson for their match against Arsenal, but they still managed to put in an excellent performance.

Sunderland were beaten 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium, but they caused Arsenal a lot of problems in the contest.

And Allardyce said: “With players like Lee Cattermole, Jermain Defoe and Seb Larsson missing, the lads who stepped in gave a very, very good performance and showed very well.

“That encourages me about the squad depth.

“If they can play like that when we’ve got players missing, they have to have the same determination between now and the end of the season.”

Sunderland created numerous opportunities against Arsenal, but they were profligate in front of goal and that ended up costing them.

The Black Cats will still take heart from the improvements they have made under Allardyce so far, even though they haven’t been able to get out of trouble.

Sunderland are currently in 19th place in the Premier League table, but there is still a fair amount of optimism around the Stadium of Light.

With the January transfer window coming up, Allardyce’s comments could be particularly important too, and if he is pleased with the depth of his squad – it seems that additions are unlikely.
