Stekelenburg has been Southampton’s first choice in goal this season, with Fraser Forster on the sidelines.
However, Thompson is unconvinced by the Dutch stopper – who the Saints signed on loan from Monaco during the summer transfer window.
"No [I don’t think he’s Premier League quality]," Thompson said. "I’ve always thought that, it’s not just a knee jerk after these couple of games.
"I just don’t think he gives anybody confidence. Most Premier League goalkeeprs are good shot-stoppers, but it’s what they do all round. I think he’s too poor."
Stekelenburg made a decent start to his Southampton career, and many of his initial appearances were impressive.
However, more recently, he has struggled – as he did during his previous spell in England, when he was playing for Fulham.
Stekelenburg is likely to drop straight out of Southampton’s team when Forster returns to fitness, which shouldn’t be too far off.
The Daily Mail have suggested that the England international stopper could be back available before the end of the month, which will be a big boost for the south coast club.
