Harry Redknapp names Newcastle duo Coloccini and Anita in his team of the weekend

St James Park

Newcastle United impressed on Sunday with a 2-0 victory.

Newcastle United secured a vital victory in the Premier League on Sunday when they overcame Liverpool 2-0 at St James’ Park and Harry Redknapp has singled out two of their players for special praise.

Martin Skrtel’s own-goal and Georginio Wijnaldum’s late second ensured Steve McClaren’s side got a much needed three points on the board to take their tally for the season to 13 and lifting them to within just a point of safety in the process.

Redknapp picked his team of the weekend for the Telegraph on Monday morning and he named two Newcastle players, although Wijnaldum was surprisingly absent from his selection.

The Newcastle players who did make it were defender Fabricio Coloccini and midfielder Vurnon Anita, two men who have come in for their fair share of criticism in the past but who impressed against the Reds.

Next up for Newcastle is a visit to White Hart Lane to take on Tottenham Hotspur and if they can get an unlikely three points there they will have well and truly turned a corner.
