Former Tottenham Hotspur owner Alan Sugar questioned via Twitter why Jurgen Klopp opted to start striker Daniel Sturridge on the bench during Liverpool’s 2-0 loss at Newcastle United on Sunday.
The England international has had his fitness problems over the past 15 months yet his midweek showing proved he has no rustiness in front of goal.
Sturridge is without doubt Liverpool’s best striker in terms of movement and goal threat and, in a number of pundits’ eyes, only Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero betters him in the Premier League.
But, for Liverpool’s clash at Newcastle, Klopp opted to start him on the bench and, as they lacked urgency and up front, both Lord Sugar and Don Hutchinson questioned the line-up.
I could have sworn Liverpool would have mullered Newcastle. But they are losing 1-0 . Klopp didn't start with Sturridge ,wonder why .— Lord Sugar (@Lord_Sugar) diciembre 6, 2015
I don't get it Klopp looked like he was on a roll. No disrespect everyone was beating Newcastle . They certainly deserved the win today .— Lord Sugar (@Lord_Sugar) diciembre 6, 2015
Liverpool poor today. J Klopp got his starting line up and subs wrong. No need for 2 holding midfielders with NUFC 1 striker. NUFC tho— Don Hutchison (@donhutch4) diciembre 6, 2015
A Martin Skrtel own goal midway through the second half handed Newcastle the initiative and Georginio Wijnaldum made sure of three points by scoring on the counterattack deep into injury-time.
Newcastle deserved the victory for their application and endeavour yet it could have been very different had the linesman not incorrectly ruled out a quite astonishing Alberto Moreno equaliser.
It was a blow for the Reds and it leaves Klopp’s side six points adrift of Manchester City in fourth place.
As for Sturridge, he will be kicking his heels in order to feature from the start next weekend, though immediate attentions turn to the Europa League on Thursday.
