Sunderland lost 3-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium yesterday.
Fabio Borini has been widely criticised by Sunderland supporters for his performance during their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal yesterday.
Sunderland put in an excellent performance at the Emirates Stadium, despite losing, but their lack of ruthlessness in front of goal was an annoyance.
The Black Cats had numerous opportunities to score, but they spurned their chances – and Borini was forced to take the brunt of their supporters’ frustrations.
The Italian was given his first start since October by Sam Allardyce, but he showed a lack of confidence throughout the contest.
When one-on-one, Borini shot straight at Petr Cech in the first-half, and he did little else of note before being replaced by Adam Johnson just after the hour mark.
Borini was hardly the only Sunderland player guility of missing chances at the Emirates Stadium, though.
Patrick van Aanholt, Steven Fletcher and Duncan Watmore all missed presentable opportunities, but Sunderland’s performance was largely encouraging.
The Black Cats have slipped back into the relegation zone, but they have made vast improvements in recent weeks.
Even the greater feeling of positivity around the Stadium of Light did not protect Borini, though, with Sunderland fans slamming his display on social media site Twitter. Here’s the best reaction.
Not gonna lie massively disappointed in Borini, what a waste of mmoney that Sam could of spent in January #SAFC— Jordan Gowling (@JordanGowling29) December 5, 2015
I like Borini as much as most fans but he hasn't impressed me since we signed him... #SAFC— Jordan maloy (@MaloyJordan) December 5, 2015
We are moving in the right direction apart from Borini and Rodwell Sunderland on the up...#SAFC— Joe Lee (@Joelee15) December 5, 2015
Good performance but poor finishing has cost Sunderland. Borini should have scored first half. I've big doubts about him #SAFC— SAFC Dolphins (@sportmad72) December 5, 2015
