Paul Clement provides fitness update on Derby County stopper Scott Carson

Scott Carson missed out on Derby County's match against Sheffield Wednesday.

Paul Clement has told BBC Sport that he is optimistic that Derby County’s Scott Carson will return to action shortly.

Carson was ruled out of Derby’s match against Sheffield Wednesday this afternoon, after he injured his back during the week.

The England international stopper is not expected to be out for too much longer though, with Derby assessing the extent of his problems over the weekend.

“His back was sore during the week,” Clement said. “He was able to rejoin training at the end of the week, and he felt fine. But overnight in the hotel, he woke up with some discomfort and wasn’t ready to play.

“We’ll have to see how he is over the next couple of days.”

Thankfully for Derby they have plenty of cover in the goalkeeping position, and Carson’s absence was not too keenly felt against Wednesday.

Lee Grant, a reliable stopper at Championship level, stepped into the line-up and kept a clean-sheet in a 0-0 draw at Hillsborough.

Grant has been forced out of the team by Carson’s excellence so far this campaign, but he proved his class earlier this afternoon.

Derby’s draw with Wednesday has lifted them up to third in the Championship table.

The Rams’ next match comes against top of the table Brighton & Hove Albion, where Carson will be hoping to return to his position between the sticks.
