8 recoveries, 3 tackles: DeAndre Yedlin was superb despite Arsenal defeat

Sunderland Stadium of Light

Sunderland were defeated 3-1 by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Sunderland defender DeAndre Yedlin had a superb game despite his side coming out on the wrong end of the 3-1 score-line against an injury-ravaged Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The result was slightly harsh on the Black Cats after they fared well for much of the afternoon and deservedly cancelled out a Joel Campbell opener minutes before the half-time interval.

Sunderland were confident going forward and they missed a number of good opportunities through the likes of Steven Fletcher, Duncan Watmore and late substitute Fabio Borini.

Despite losing, there were plenty of positives for Sam Allardyce to mull over, including the superb performance of on-loan right-back DeAndre Yedlin.

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, the Tottenham Hotspur full-back was one of Sunderland’s better players throughout as he contributed in a number of key areas.

The United States international made three tackles, three interceptions, four effective clearances, six duels won and an impressive eight ball recoveries – comparable with any other player on the pitch.

While Yedlin was relatively quiet in possession, he kept it simple and offered an attacking outlet from deep.

Arsenal’s second-half goals came courtesy of Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey, the latter a last-minute strike after Sunderland pushed up in hope of grabbing a late equaliser.

It was a slight bump in the road in terms of the Wearside outfit’s survival hopes, yet from a performance perspective they have every right to leave the capital with their heads held high.
