Louis van Gaal will be without Wayne Rooney for Manchester United’s crunch games with West Ham and Wolfsburg, but that may not be the end of the world for the Red Devils.
That’s because a new sta tput together by Opta has highlighted that, when it comes to games in the Premier League under the Dutchman, United have actually fared quite well.
A tweet from the sports data firm’s OptaJoe account highlighted as much:
0 - Man Utd have not lost any of the seven PL games they've played without Wayne Rooney in the Louis van Gaal era (W4 D3). Absent.— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) December 4, 2015
Manchester United’s form during Rooney’s absence will therefore be interesting to track, given the amount of criticism dished out to their club captain by pundits and fans already this season.
Rooney has so far managed just seven goals in all competitions this season, with three of those coming during a Champions League qualifier against Club Brugge.
And should United prevail against West Ham and then Wolfsburg, then Van Gaal could have a tough decision on his hand as to whether he recalls the England record-breaker or stays with his new-look team.
What would you do?
