Francis Benali reacts on Twitter to Lescott being named MOTM v Southampton

Southampton Football Club

The Saints icon wasn't happy that the Aston Villa defender was given the accolade.

Former Southampton man Francis Benali was unhappy with the fact some considered Joleon Lescott to be man of the match when the South Coast side faced Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.

The two teams played out a 1-1 draw at St Mary's, with Lescott opening the scoring for visiting Villa.

The point will come as a welcome boost for Aston Villa, of course, as it's only their sixth of the Premier League season so far.

Naturally, only wins will be of massive help from here but, away from home, a draw is certainly no disgrace.

For Southampton, meanwhile, the home stalemate will no doubt disappoint considering the need to bounce back from frustrating recent losses.

Cédric Soares 7 1 3 1 90
Virgil van Dijk 3 0 0 3 90
Joleon Lescott 0 1 8 1 90

As just some of the Opta stats show, Lescott was out-tackled by both Van Dijk and Cedric Soares, while he was also out-performed in the air by the former.

The Aston Villa man did make eight clearances, however, and the away fans will care little about the case put forward by former Southampton man Benali. For today at least, Lescott will be very well thought of indeed!
