Villa are currently bottom of the table with just five points from their first 14 matches and with Remi Garde’s men already seven points from safety thinks are looking very bleak.
Garde was brought in following Tim Sherwood’s departure and while he saw his side earn a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Manchester City he has since overseen defeats to Everton and Watford that have left Villa with a mountain to climb.
There is still plenty of time to turn things round but the longer Villa go without building up a head of steam, the more they could be cast adrift.
Writing on the Mail’s website on Thursday afternoon, Keown said, “Unfortunately I think it will take a miracle for Villa to stay up.
“I’d like to see more from Remi Garde as well. He needs to show some personality and steer their hearts and minds and pull everybody together.”
They are wise words from a player who knows all too well what it is like to fight – and ultimately lose – a relegation battle at Villa Park, but only time will tell if Garde proves to be the managerial masterstroke their fans are hoping for.
