Don Hutchinson says Steve McClaren has made another Newcastle mistake

Steve McClaren

Don Hutchinson believes Steve McClaren made an error with his latest comments to the press.

Newcastle United face a rampant Liverpool team this weekend, and many fear the worst.

It is up to the club to be upbeat about their chances of success and proving their doubters wrong, but has manager Steve McClaren struck the right tone in the lead up to the game?

The under pressure manager was honest ahead of the clash, telling The BBC that confidence is waning.

He said: "Nobody is happy at this football club. All of sudden we have gone three steps forward and five or six back. We believe in these players but confidence is very fragile."

Gateshead born former Premier League midfielder Don Hutchinson took to Twitter to sarcastically applaud McClaren's comments.

Hutchinson believes McClaren is talking like a beaten man, which will rub off on both the fanbase and his players.

Liverpool have had mixed records against Newcastle at St James' Park in recent seasons, losing last November to a 1-0 winner from Ayoze Perez, but won 6-0 at the stadium in April 2013.

Newcastle are currently in the relegation zone after losing their last game 5-1 away at Crystal Palace, while Liverpool are coming off a 6-1 away win over Southampton in the Capital One Cup in midweek.
