Southampton were thrashed by Liverpool on Wednesday evening, falling down to a 6-1 defeat in the League Cup quarter-final.
Despite taking the leading inside the opening minute, and playing at home, Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi shot Liverpool to victory, with the former netting twice in the first half, and the latter scoring his first goals for the club, and completing a hat-trick.
Caulker arrived at St Mary’s Stadium at the beginning of this season from QPR, agreeing a season-long loan deal with the Saints as cover after some defensive injury issues plagued the club.
The game against Liverpool was the eighth he has played for Southampton, but the 23-year-old’s reputation as an up-and-coming star has somewhat diminished this season.
He has gone from being a future England stalwart to a player who doesn’t look good enough for the Premier League, and his performance against the Reds was a real horrorshow.
QPR will be thankful that Caulker is not playing for them with performances like this, and Southampton fans made it clear on Twitter after the game that they did not want the once-capped England international playing for them either.
Ive not seen such a poor individual defensive performance than that of Steven Caulker for a very very long time— Luke Pickering (@lukepicko8) December 3, 2015
I've heard Ronald sent a car round to take Caulker back to QPR this morning, but Caulker gave it so much space, it went off without him— Charlie Robertson (@saintrobertson) December 3, 2015
Caulker a disgrace of a player!— GLI (@Garilee11) December 3, 2015
After watching him last season, I'm not too surprised that it's Stephen Caulker in the middle of that Southampton defence tonight.— Jack Ewins (@jackcdewins) December 3, 2015
Caulker is not good enough, Clasie looks out of his depth, we have no plan b when things go wrong and Victor is not a central defender— Simon (@spminty) December 3, 2015
Caulker and Clasie tonight...Jesus wept. Looked completely lost. Caulker has Eng caps too....shocking— Chris (@cj_garrett) December 2, 2015
@SaintsfcViews Caulker shouldn't be allowed near the pitch. And Stekelenberg didn't cover himself in glory. Give Davis a go in the sticks.— Stewart Green (@stewartrgreen) December 2, 2015
I like Steven Caulker, but boi every defence he's in seems to just get peppered— Mark Bartley (@markusbartley) December 2, 2015
Steven Caulker is the most embarrassing signing Saints have ever made... Cost us the game tonight.— Will McNamara (@WillMcNamara16) December 2, 2015
@SaintsfcViews I think Steven caulker being allowed near a pitch is a questionable tactic!!— Tom Chalkley (@ChalkleyT) December 2, 2015
