Report: Liverpool eye Raphael Guerreiro as a potential Alberto Moreno alternative

Liverpool have been linked with Raphael Guerreiro.

According to a report in the Italian publication Tuttomercatoweb, Liverpool are looking at Lorient left-back Raphael Guerreiro as a potential replacement for Alberto Moreno.

Fresh reports have linked Moreno with a move to Real Madrid, and Sky Sports quote his agent Javier Moya as stating that a switch the Santiago Bernabeu would interest his client.

Indeed, while a proposed January move is rather unlikely, the pull of Madrid is enough to tempt any player and Moreno’s Spanish roots are something which only enhance the idea.

As such, the Reds would be wise to monitor potential alternatives and the Italian editorial TMW state that one player has already been sounded out.

“Alberto Moreno is a target for Real Madrid, so Liverool are already thinking about his possible replacement – Lorient’s Portuguese left-back Raphael Guerreiro,” the report states.

Guerreiro has been one of the standout players for Lorient this season, starting 11 Ligue 1 matches and helping the club challenge towards the top of the table.

The talented defender was born and raised in France and first played for Caen before joining Lorient in 2013. He has since made over 50 league starts for the club, despite his young age.

In spite of growing up in France, Guerreiro has a Portuguese father and opted to represent the Iberian outfit as a youngster, progressing through the youth teams before winning a full cap.

He’s defensively sound, quick in the tackle and likes to push up and join the attack – drawing parallels with current Portuguese number one left-back Fabio Coentrao.

The speculation surrounding Moreno’s future and Real Madrid may be total nonsense, yet the Reds would be wise to continue to monitor Guerreiro’s progress nonetheless.

The report goes on to say that Lorient have already turned down an offer from Borussia Dortmund.
