Report: Mike Williamson set to miss Newcastle clash with Liverpool

The defender has tweaked his hamstring and will miss their game this weekend.

Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson is set to miss this weekend's clash with Liverpool after picking up a hamstring injury, according to Sky Sports.

The defender was recently recalled from his loan spell with Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers as a replacement for fellow defender Jamaal Lascelles, who has also picked up a knock.

Williamson was in line to start against Jurgen Klopp’s in-form side, with manager Steve McClaren looking to ring the changes for the Premier League contest.

Those were likely to come about in defence, with the Magpies having conceded eight goals in their last two games to Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

However, he has now tweaked his hamstring and is a major doubt for the game, in yet another blow for McClaren’s side, reports Sky Sports.

Newcastle are currently stuck in the bottom three in 19th place, two points away from rivals Sunderland in 17th, who pushed them into the relegation zone with a win last weekend.

They will not be looking forward to taking on Liverpool either, with the Reds currently flying under Klopp and chasing a Champions League place this season.
