Liverpool made it through to the semi-final of the League Cup after thrashing Southampton.

This was a very different meeting from October when Liverpool and Southampton played out a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

In the opening stages it looked as if Sadio Mane had come back to haunt Liverpool again as he gave the Saints an early lead, but what followed after the first 20 minutes was a little unexpected, especially given the home side had the upper hand in the opening exchanges.

Daniel Sturridge's two goals turned the course of the tie around, while Divock Origi's feather touch from Alberto Moreno's pile driver meant the Reds went into the interval with a two-goal cushion.

Southampton tried to start the second half as quickly as they started the first but Liverpool withstood what came at them and started to flex their muscle. Jordon Ibe's through ball was despatched by Origi before Ibe got on the scoresheet himself. Origi then rounded off his hat-trick after heading home Brad Smith's delivery.

It was a great night for Liverpool which gives Jurgen Klopp food for thought in terms of his team selection for future matches after making so many changes to his side.
