The forward returned with a bang in the 6-1 demolition of Southampton on Wednesday.
The striker returned to full fitness this week and was thrown in by manager Jurgen Klopp for their Capital One Cup clash with Southampton.
He made an immediate impact, scoring two first half goals to help his side recover from going one nil down early on and win 6-1 on the evening.
It was an impressive display from him on his return, and Murphy says he is the best that England have to choose from.
“I have said for a long time I think he is England’s most gifted striker,” he told TalkSport.
“He is a striker that no matter what is going on in a game, I always feel he can score. He doesn’t necessarily need service. He can beat people, he dribbles and he can score from long range.
“He scores all sorts of goals and he is probably the only player I look at, a bit like Wayne Rooney in his younger days, who has got that swag and arrogance when he plays.”
While there is no denying the talent that Sturridge brings to the table, the likes of Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney would argue they are the country’s best.
The Manchester United striker may have struggled so far this season, but there is underlying quality and his record breaking efforts with England still stand in his stead.
Harry Kane has also proved his quality again this season, with him continuing to score the goals, and would stake his claim to be England’s best at this point as well.
