Trevor Sinclair claims Everton's John Stones could become one of the greatest footballers of all-time

Everton Goodison 2

John Stones has been in wonderful form since breaking into Everton's starting line-up.

Trevor Sinclair has told talkSPORT that Everton defender John Stones has the potential to become one of the greatest players of all time.

Stones’ performances for Everton since breaking into the first team have been nothing short of remarkable, and he has coped brilliantly despite his tender years.

Sinclair has seen a lot of promise in the centre-back, and he believes that a title-chaser such as Manchester City should make an attempt to sign the youngster in January.

“Stones is potentially one of the best ever,” Sinclair said.

“The way he is playing, he is going to inspire a new generation of centre-halves who want to play, who don’t want to just hoof it, who want to get the ball down and have the confidence and the ability to get themselves out of tight situations and start attacks.

“It would be great if they [City] could get someone like John Stones. [But] I’m sure Everton don’t want to let him go and I’m sure there will be a lot of big teams in for him because he is top drawer.”

Stones was signed by Everton from Barnsley, and his rise to prominence has been rapid.

After becoming a first team regular last season, the 21-year-old has developed a reputation for being one of the finest talents in the Premier League, and earned England recognition for his good form.

Stones’ ability to bring the ball out from the back makes him a rare talent for England to produce, and he looks to be the complete defender.

Everton are likely to face a fight to keep hold of him, but they have been resolute so far.

The Toffees rebuffed Chelsea’s attempts to sign Stones in the summer, as covered by Sky Sports, and they will be eager to keep the England international at Goodison Park for as long as possible.
