Player reaction: Everton's goalscorers delight after booking semi-final place

Everton Goodison

Everton progressed to the semi-finals of the League Cup with a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

Everton took one step closer to winning their first trophy since 1995 with a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium on Tuesday night.

A wonderful opening goal from Gerard Deulofeu set the ball rolling midway through the first half before he turned provider five minutes later as his cross was headed home by Romelu Lukaku.

There was no repeat of the side's capitulation against Bournemouth as Championship side Middlesbrough rarely threatened the Toffees goal, meaning a fairly routine win for Roberto Martinez's men.

The competition has taken on extra significance for Everton this season as big names such as Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea have been dumped out of the competition, allowing it to open up. There are still other sides who can provide a threat in the competition with Manchester City and Stoke City also progressing to the last four, with the remaining quarter-final to be contested between Southampton and Liverpool this evening.

Roberto Martinez will be aware that his side will have to beat the best in order to lift silverware, but given his side's threat in front of goal lately, he will fancy their chances of winning the competition for the first time in their history.

Understandably, the players who have since taken to twitter to react to the result are thrilled that their name will be in the hat for the semi-finals that take place in January.

Goalscorers Deulofeu and Lukaku were happy with the result and their contribution while young defender Tyias Browning was also, unsurprisingly, delighted to see the side's progression to the last four.
