Gallery: Everton book their place in the last four as quality proves too much for Middlesbrough

Everton ensured their place in the semi-finals of the League Cup with a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

It was the perfect way for Everton to bounce back from their disappointing draw against Bournemouth in the Premier League at the weekend.

Goals from Gerard Deulofeu and Romelu Lukaku were the difference between the two sides at the Riverside Stadium, as the Toffees kept their chances of lifting their first trophy since 1995 very much alive.

Deulofeu's opener was wonderfully taken, before some terrific skill from Spaniard allowed Lukaku to score a terrific header, as Everton became the first visiting side to score two goals at the Riverside Stadium this season.

Middlesbrough, on the other hand, didn't offer much. Joel Robles only had one or two long range efforts to deal with in 90 minutes, as there were no signs of Roberto Martinez's side being on the end of another comeback.

Even with one game remaining to play at this stage of the competition, it is already clear that it is going to be fiercely contested until the end, with four Premier League sides in the semi-finals.

Everton will be relishing the occasion but enjoying their win from last night, and the manner of it. Another big positive for them will be the return of Leighton Baines, who came on as a second half substitute.
