The former Villa midfielder believes Villa would struggle in the Football League.
The former England international played over 300 games for Villa in a hometown career spanning 14 years. Now the 37-year-old has been talking to BBC 5 Live about his club and is not sure, if relegated, Villa could make it back from the Championship.
"That's my fear. If they go down this year, next season they will find it really hard to come back up. I've watched them in Cup games like when Bradford have come here and Leyton Orient have come here. To be fair the Championship is a tough league at the moment.
"I just see teams coming to Aston Villa - great setup, great pitch - it'll be like a Cup final for them. I think that's where they'll find it so difficult."
Hendrie makes a good point and you can ask several teams who have found themselves stuck in the Football League of this 'cup final' effect.
Leeds United currently have the worst home record in the Championship at the iconic Elland Road and Nottingham Forest are another team who have struggled to make it back to the top flight since dropping into the Football League.
Villa would immediately have to restructure their squad considering the wages many of the recent recruits would be on and the Championship is improving every season - an immediate return would not be a sure thing.
The best way to avoid of course would be to pull their finger out for this season. Villa remain on just five points, stranded at the foot of the Premier League table.
