Rangers boss Warburton gives update on Gedion Zelalem loan extension

Rangers 3

Rangers are close to extending Arsenal midfielder Gedion Zelalem’s loan deal.

Zelalem has been on loan at Ibrox since the summer transfer window, and Mark Warburton has told the Scottish Sun that the Gers are close to extending his deal until the end of the campaign.

Warburton said: “We’re almost there with Gedion and hopefully he’ll be with us for the rest of the season. I thought he was tremendous against St Mirren last Saturday, he’s working hard and is in good shape.”

Zelalem has made 12 appearances for the Gers this season, registering an impressive five assists in that time.

The USA youth international has proven his exceptional talent, and although he is still not a guaranteed first-team starter, there are no doubts about his potential.

This is Zelalem’s first chance at playing competitive senior football, and staying at Ibrox for the entire campaign would be best for his development.

His loan is set to end in January, but Warburton has confirmed that he is almost there with finalising an extension for the midfielder, to keep him with the Gers until the end of the season.

There may be calls for Zelelam to be dropped on occasion, as he is not a guaranteed performer in high-pressure fixtures, but he is a top class talent and can change close games with one pass when on form.

It was certainly a coup for Rangers to secure his loan signing over the summer, and keeping him for the entire campaign will do much to improve Warburton’s chances of getting his team promoted at the end of this season.
