Phil Thompson on Tottenham’s title chances and January signings

Can Tottenham Hotspur beat Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal to the Premier League title this season?

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson suggested on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (November 28) that Tottenham Hotspur can win the Premier League title this season.

“Why shouldn’t they have that idea?” said the former Liverpool defender when asked about Tottenham’s chances of winning the Premier League title this campaign.

“They wouldn't be wanting to shout out. They will be thinking: ‘we are hard to beat, we can beat the top teams, we can beat the lesser teams’.”

Thompson also warned Tottenham against making the wrong signings in the January transfer window.

“If they do sign (players in January), they wouldn’t want to upset the ambiance in the dressing room at the moment because it looks as though they are all pulling in one way,” said the former England international. “Everybody is in it."

“To bring somebody in, they have to really look at the background and make sure they do not upset it,” added Thompson.

Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal are the top three favourites for the Premier League title this season, but Tottenham could crash the party.

Spurs’ main objective this campaign is to finish in the top four and qualify for the 2016-17 Champions League.

However, given how things have been going so far this campaign, there is a chance that Mauricio Pochettino’s side could end up winning the title.

The North London outfit are only two points behind Arsenal in fifth and just four points behind leaders City. United, who are third in the standings at the moment, are just three points ahead of Spurs.

Even now, not many will fancy Tottenham for the league title, perhaps because they do not have the depth in squad that the likes of City, United and Arsenal have.

However, if Mauricio Pochettino’s side maintain their consistency for the next few months, then they should be considered genuine challengers for the title.
