Paul Merson said on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (November 28) that when Everton play their best football, they are like Arsenal.
“I always think when they get their best team on the pitch and start playing, this is a very good football team,” said former Arsenal attacker Merson. “It (the passing and movement) is like Arsenal.”
It is a huge compliment from Merson to compare Everton to Arsenal.
Arsenal may not have won the Premier League title since 2004, but they have played the best football in England for the past 15 or so years.
Arsene Wenger’s side are a joy to watch going forward, although they do tend to commit mistakes in defence.
Everton do not have the same budget as Arsenal and do not have the same quality of players, but under manager Roberto Martinez, the Toffees' passing and movement is similar to that of the Gunners.
The likes of John Stones (defender), Gerard Deulofeu (winger) and Ross Barkley (midfielder) are very good on the ball.
The Toffees may not be good enough to challenge for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season, but they can certainly complete for a Europa League spot.
