It has been unofficially confirmed that Newcastle United are in full scale crisis mode.
Williamson, 32, had been considered surplus to requirements at Newcastle by Steve McClaren earlier this season, and was not picked for a single minute of Premier League football before being loaned out to Wolves in late October.
Just a fortnight ago the centre-back had expressed his delight at his loan being extended until mid-January, speaking to the Express and Star, and now he has to re-adjust to heading back into what has become a toxic mess at Newcastle right now.
The club are in the relegation zone and below rivals Sunderland, and were hammered 5-1 by Crystal Palace at the weekend.
Manager Steve McClaren is under pressure, especially with David Moyes available and looking for work, and he needs results.
Whether Mike Williamson is the right man to help him is another matter, but at present it is pretty much all they have, barring throwing in an inexperienced youngster to a relegation fight.
It could also be a sign of frustration with Fabricio Coloccini, and a hope that Williamson has regained his confidence - but playing for his Newcastle side it would be all too easy for him to lose it again.
Here is a look at how Newcastle fans reacted on Twitter to the news...

I believe Williamson should go straight back into the team. He went to Wolves and has probably regained confidence. Drop Colo. #nufc— Tommy Franklin (@YorkMagpie) December 1, 2015
