Coach discloses what Alan Pardew told Crystal Palace's squad about Newcastle United before Saturday's match

Crystal Palace beat Newcastle United 5-1 in their most recent outing.

Crystal Palace coach John Salako has told the Chronicle that Alan Pardew encouraged his side to ‘knock the spirit’ out of Newcastle United at the weekend.

Palace hosted the Magpies at Selhurst Park on Saturday, and they put them to the sword with an excellent performance.

The Eagles beat Newcastle 5-1, and Pardew’s dressing room team-talk rather highlighted the problems that Steve McClaren faces with his squad.

“What we said in the dressing room was ‘listen, let’s not let this side get up. Knock the spirit out of them and then they will go’,” he said.

Newcastle’s team have been guilty of collapsing in fixtures, and it is interesting that opposition managers are now focusing on this flaw.

Pardew was right to encourage his side to go for the jugular on Saturday, as Newcastle did fold, as he predicted they would.

The Magpies took the lead early on, but as soon as Palace scored their first, McClaren’s side fell apart.

Newcastle’s defeat to Palace has resulted in them falling back into the relegation zone, and fears are rising at St. James’ Park.

The Magpies are now two points adrift of safety, with their next fixture coming against in-form Liverpool.
