Premier League outfit Stoke will take on Championship side Wednesday at the Britannia Stadium in the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup, and Nicholas has backed the Potters to win it.
“Mark Hughes really wants to win this game,” the former Scotland international predicted on Skysports.com.
“They’ve been presented with a great draw and there's no reason for them not to think they can win the Capital One Cup. If they can beat Chelsea, they can beat anyone.
“Sheffield Wednesday were obviously excellent against my old club Arsenal and will think they've got nothing to lose, open up and have a go at Stoke, which will suit the hosts.
“Carlos Carvalhal has some unpredictable talent in his side but I think the hosts will be able to grind out a win.”
A footnote added: “Charlie predicts: 3-1 with Jonathan Walters to score first”.
Hosts Stoke will head into the tie against Wednesday on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Sunderland away from home at the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon.
Mark Hughes’s side are 12th in the Premier League table at the moment with 19 points from 14 matches.
Meanwhile, Wednesday are in contention of finishing in the top six of the Championship this season.
The Owls are eighth in the standings at the moment with 28 points from 18 matches, level on points with sixth-place Birmingham City.
Carlos Carvalhal’s side will head into Tuesday evening’s time against Stoke on the back of a 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers away from home at Ewood Park in the Championship.
