The 23-year-old Portuguese midfielder is perfect for Arsenal and they need him as soon as possible.
Arsenal’s injury crisis shows no signs of improving; in fact it is getting worse by the week with Santi Cazorla, Laurent Koscielny and Alexis Sanchez all picking up problems against Norwich City on Sunday.
Such is the Premier League title race this season, with the top six separated by just six points, that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will know he has rarely had a better chance to reclaim the league trophy, but perhaps only if he makes the right decisions in January.
The transfer window is just a month away and in that time Wenger should be oiling the proverbial wheels to ensure he gets the players this Arsenal side needs to push on for the second half of the campaign.
One of those players is Sporting Lisbon’s defensive midfielder William Carvalho, who has recently returned from a serious injury and is now back in the squad and playing practically every minute available.
William is a wonderfully talented young player and while he has not quite maintained the outstanding form of his breakthrough campaign – when every club and their dog were linked with him – the Portuguese international looks destined for greatness.
Even when Francis Coquelin returns to the Arsenal starting line-up the Gunners will be short in that position, and with the Frenchman side-lined, his absence will be felt more keenly than most.
If Arsenal bid for William they are unlikely to be the only ones, but he is exactly the kind of player they need and it is time Wenger spent big again rather than regretting it come May.
