Newcastle defender Janmaat has been named North Eastern Footballer of the Year.
Despite being on the end of a thrashing from Crystal Palace on Saturday, Newcastle defender Janmaat picked up the prestigious FWA award this weekend.
Since arriving at St James' Park last summer, Janmaat has established himself in the Newcastle team as their first-choice right-back, and one of few players to possess both an attacking threat and defensive stability.
He is an all-rounded full-back, and he is sure to be making the move to a bigger club in the coming years if the Magpies continue to struggle seeing as he is a Dutch international with a proven pedigree at club level.
Being named FWA North East Footballer of the Year comes at the end of a year which has bought little to cheer about for fans of either Newcastle or Sunderland.
And a Sunderland hero has had his say on the awarding of the title to Janmaat, with Micky Gray taking to Twitter to question the award.
Janmaat north east footballer of the year??? Really— michael gray (@mickygray33) November 30, 2015
Gray certainly does not seem convinced that Janmaat deserves the award, but then, it is hard to suggest that any Newcastle or Sunderland player rightfully deserves an award considering how 2015 has been on Tyneside and Wearside.
It is ironic that Janmaat’s award came on the same weekend the defence he was part of shipped five goals against Palace to put them in the bottom three, and if he is considered the best player of the year, it shows just how far the North Eastern football scene has fallen.
