Klopp expecting Coutinho to be back for clash with Southampton

Philippe Coutinho

The Liverpool star was sorely missed in the 1-0 win over Swansea City on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp has told Liverpool’s official website that he is expecting Philippe Coutinho to be fit for the clash with Southampton.

The Brazilian missed the midweek win over Bordeaux in the Europa League having picked up a hamstring injury in the win over Manchester City.

He was expected to be back for Sunday’s game with Swansea City at Anfield, but Klopp decided to leave him out and not risk his fitness.

He was sorely missed despite his side’s 1-0 win over the Swans, and Klopp says he is expecting his star man to be back for the Capital One Cup clash with Southampton.

“Philippe had a very intensive session yesterday but we decided two or three days ago that we didn’t want to risk [him] for this game,” he told liverpoolfc.com.

“Now I think he’s fit. I saw him in the dressing room and he looks good. I’ll have to talk with him tomorrow – I think he’s ready for Southampton.”

The return of Coutinho will be a big boost for the side, as they look to make the semi finals of the Capital One Cup with victory over the Saints.

He has been the star man again for them this season; with him very much the key player in their impressive win over Manchester City last week.

He is their top goalscorer, with five to his name this season, while he is also joint top of the assists chart, with him and James Milner sitting on three apiece.
