According to the Guardian, Southampton are ready to battle Manchester United for shock midfield target Borja Valero.
The report states that Southampton are interested in the former West Bromwich Albion midfielder, who was scouted by Manchester United last week with the view to a potential January transfer move.
The all-action midfielder, who turns 31 in January, has become an integral part of Fiorentina's side and is widely revered as one of the best central midfielders in the Serie A.
Valero has started in every league match for the Florence-based side this season and has one goal and one assists for his endeavours.
Should Southampton look to make a move for Valero?
Although he has become one of the top central midfielders in the Italian league, the underwhelming spell at West Brom still hangs over his head.
He seemingly failed to live up to his hype in England and struggled to adapt to the English game. He made 30 appearances for West Brom during the 2008-09 season, where they suffered relegation, and was quickly moved on once they were confirmed as a Championship side.
Now, with seven years more experience, Valero may want to come back to prove that he is good enough to cut it in the Premier League. Nevertheless, It would be a gamble for Southampton as he could fail to adapt to the English game again and prove to be a failure.
It's a tough decision for Koeman to make, however, if he can replicate his form in Italy in England then it should be a no brainer.
