Payet has been one of the signings of the season for West Ham, contributing with five goals and three assists before succumbing to injury in the 1-1 draw at home to Everton.
His absence is expectedly going to hit the Hammers hard, yet Lanzini feels there is enough quality in West Ham’s ranks to cover for his loss and feels the responsibility is shared among the group.
“It was a big blow because he’s one of our best players and you know he can win a game. But we have the players to replace him,” Lanzini told reporters.
“In terms of responsibility, it’s something we all have. When I arrived, I had the responsibility of making progress and proving I can play here because I’ve played in leagues where the level is lower.”
Lanzini is now widely regarded as one of West Ham’s leading figures in terms of ability and impact and boss Slaven Bilic will be hopeful he can step up in Payet’s absence.
The Argentine youngster arrived at Upton Park on loan in the summer and has far proven to be an astute piece of business for the club, especially as a recall clause was removed from his contract.
The 22-year-old largely plays in wide areas, yet in Payet’s absence he may be positioned more centrally and tasked with providing creativity on the counter attack through the middle.
Payet is so vital to the way West Ham play that his absence naturally poses a dilemma for Bilic. While he may not be replaceable like-for-like, a slight tweak in system could prove effective enough.
