Spurs head into the encounter in wonderful form but question marks have been raised over their fitness levels following a gruelling Europa League trip to Azerbaijan to take on Qarabag on Thursday.
While there can’t really be any excuses in regards to European matches, Mauricio Pochettino’s preference of having a small squad to work with results in a rather taxing schedule for certain players.
And that could play a big part in the London derby this weekend, with former Liverpool assistant boss Thompson backing the hosts to win 2-1 on the condition that they turn up in full fitness.
“Harry Kane is on fire right now and if Spurs still have enough in them from the long trip, then I fancy them to see off Jose Mourinho's side,” Thompson explained to Sky Sports.
“The Premier League season is so unpredictable right now though and a win for Chelsea fires them right back in the top-four race.”
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has stressed before the game that Spurs can have no complaints about their schedule after the Blues suffered a similar run of games both last season and the year before, as quoted by Goal.
For the likes of Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane, the games are coming thick and fast, and boss Pochettino will be hopeful that they aren’t lacking in energy.
Despite there being a ten point gap between the two teams, it’s a huge matchup in the race for a top four spot and a Spurs victory will see them close the gap on Manchester United and Leicester City.
Chelsea arguably can’t afford to lose if they still harbour any hopes of a top four finish, while a win in contrast will give them further belief that they can perform a remarkable turnaround, given that they currently lie just four points clear of the relegation zone.
