The 25-year-old has put in some good displays of late for the Black Cats.
There are a few Sunderland players changing opinions right now.
Patrick van Aanholt is perhaps the biggest. Indeed, the full-back netted a superb strike against Stoke City on Saturday afternoon and was otherwise excellent for the Black Cats as Sam Allardyce's men beat the Potters 2-0.
What a job Allardyce has done already - especially transforming the likes of Van Aanholt, Younes Kaboul and more.
Sunderland are now out of the bottom three, unthinkable just a few weeks ago, and fans are delighted with the contribution of several of their players.
Allardyce's men have won back-to-back games and three of their last six. Van Aanholt, meanwhile, received particular praise from fans on Twitter after the Stoke game.
The 25-year-old has been on the receiving end of plenty of criticism this season but has turned his fortunes around somewhat of late. The Sunderland defender will need to keep his current standards up - two good games don't make a good campaign.
But there has been plenty of encouragement on the Van Aanholt front at the Stadium of Light and Sunderland fans took much delight in his display on Saturday:
And it looks like big Sam has actually managed to turn van Aanholt into a defender - who’d have though it possible? #safc— TheSilentPlanet (@TheSilentPlanet) November 28, 2015
Van Aanholt has been class today and would've easily been my man of the match but I just noticed his short sleeves and gloves. 2/10. #SAFC— Andrew Tutty (@andrewtutty) November 28, 2015
What a goal!!!! Even with that aside I think van Aanholt has been excellent today!! #safc— Richard James Purdom (@RomeoJulietPapa) November 28, 2015
Lesson for "supporters" writing off players so early in the season or their #SAFC careers today. Kaboul and Van Aanholt superb today.— NDJ0602 (@NDJ0602) November 28, 2015
