The Tottenham defender has labelled the Chelsea attacker as one of the Premier League’s best.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has admitted that Chelsea centre forward Diego Costa is one of the Premier League’s best, but told the club’s official website that he is ready to mark the Spain international.
Spurs host their London rivals later today and will look to extend their Premier League unbeaten record to 13 games and potentially move into the top four with a victory.
Costa has had a tough campaign to date, scoring only three goals and like his team has been receiving plenty of criticism for a slow start to the season.
However, the Spain international will lead the line for the visitors today and has a track record of inciting a reaction from those he plays against.
Vertonghen has admitted that Costa has quality but stated that he is ready for the challenge.
“He’s good; he keeps you switched on,” the Belgian enforcer today the club’s official website.
“He’s a very good striker and we will have keep ourselves going against him. He’s one of the best in the league and we’ll have to be at 100% to stop him.”
Mauricio Pochettino’s men had a challenging trip to Azerbaijan in midweek to face Qarabag in the Europa League, leaving them with considerably less time to prepare for the clash against the Blues.
Vertonghen has stated that this will not be a factor however, and that the hosts will be motivated in welcoming the Premier League champions to White Hart Lane.
“We will be ready on Sunday, the Lane will help us and it’s a London derby, so we don’t need to look for motivation. We will be there and ready for them,” the former Ajax man continued.
“They have so much quality. They are doing better than at the beginning of the season and they will feel they have to beat us on Sunday, so we have to be ready for that.
“A London derby is always something different, especially against Chelsea.”
Tottenham could increase the points gap between themselves and the Blues to 13 with a win this afternoon.
