The former AC Milan star was recently culled as part of a restructuring at Turkish club Trabzonspor.
Aston Villa were dealt a blow during the recent international break. Summer signing Jordan Amavi is out for the rest of the season with a knee ligament injury picked up on duty with the France under-21s.
The defender, signed from Nice this summer, has been one of their better performing summer arrivals and his absence will be keenly felt in the Aston Villa first-team.
The club are not blessed in the position. Kieran Richardson has struggled this term whilst Alan Hutton is naturally right-footed. Joleon Lescott used to play there at times for Everton but has not done so in a long while whilst Jose Crespo has struggled to make an impact. They could recall Joe Bennett from Bournemouth, but he would not be an inspiring replacement and the same goes for Aly Cissokho at Porto.
One option could be a free agent signing and a former AC Milan man has recently become available.
Guinea international Kevin Constant was released by Trabzonspor recently and will be available to join a new team on the first of January. He is currently training with the French third tier side Frejus Saint-Raphael but at 28-years-old he would still have plenty to offer a Premier League club.
Not only is he a left-back, but the former Champions League star can also play in holding midfield - giving Villa another reason to bring in.
Versatile, experienced, French-speaking and free - Constant looks perfect for Villa.
