Aston Villa cult hero Olof Mellberg gets first manager role at Swedish third tier club

The former Villa defender has a tough task on his hands.

Aston Villa have recently changed their manager. Remi Garde recently took over after Tim Sherwood left the club after a poor start to the new season.

Now a former Aston Villa defender is set to embark on his first steps into management.

The player in question is former Villa defender Olof Mellberg. The Swede joined Villa from Spanish side Racing Santander in 2001 and in his seven years with the club played 260 games and became a cult icon at the club in better times.

He went on to join Juventus, Olympiakos, Villarreal and Copenhagen before retiring in 2014.

Yesterday the 38-year-old, who played 117 games for Sweden in his career, was appointed in his first managerial role at Brommapojkarna.

A former feature in the Swedish top-flight they were relegated to the third tier of Swedish football this term and Mellberg has a real task on his hand turning things around at the club.

Of course on Twitter Villa fans were pleased to see that Mellberg - who certainly seems to have the mentality for management - is moving into coaching:

Who knows, if he succeeds in his rebuilding job at Brommapojkarna he might end up in the hotseat at Villa one day.
