The pair did not end on the best of terms at Everton.
Everton welcome AFC Bournemouth to Goodison Park this weekend and in doing so will come up against a former club hero.
Sylvain Distin left Everton as a free transfer in the summer and went on to join Bournemouth. He spent six years with the club, thriving at times after his move from Portsmouth.
But toward the end of his career at Everton he began to struggle and the emergence of John Stones eventually saw him out of the side completely.
“Sylvain has an incredible amount of memories of Everton and it’s one of those games which is a good time to see each other.
“But for 90 minutes we will be competitive then afterwards we will go back to those memories.”
Of course the pair's relationship was fractious after he left. In May Distin criticised Martinez for blocking him of a move to West Ham in February - to then play him just once more in the final game of the season.
He was quoted as telling L'Equipe in May:
"On February 2, I went to see the coach about the proposal for West Ham who were offering me a transfer until the end of the season.
"The next day, at a press conference, he said that he counted on me and that I was part of the team. Since that day I haven't been called up once.
"I have no idea why. Ask him. We have not spoken since."
Hopefully however these issues are now in the past. It will be interesting to see how the pair interact when they meet up at the weekend.
One thing for sure though - Distin can expect a good reception from the Everton fans.
