Photos: Kane and Son combine to send Spurs to the Europa League knockout stage

Tottenham secured their qualification to the knockout stage of the Europa League.

Tottenham secured a tough fought victory over Qarabag on Thursday afternoon, with Harry Kane’s headed goal sending Spurs through to the knockout stages of the competition.

It was a surprise to see Kane named in the starting XI given that Spurs are playing Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, and many expected that the striker would be rested ahead of that game.

However, Mauricio Pochettino did not take his Azerbaijani opponents lightly, and opted to field a strong line-up.

Still, it took until the closing stages of the game for Spurs to take the initiative after a frustrating evening for the Lilywhites.

As the clock ticked into the 78th minute, Spurs won a corner which Christian Eriksen curled into the near post. Heung-Min Son flicked the corner on at the near post, for Kane to poach with a powerful header just yards out to send the ball into the back of the net.

It was Kane’s ninth goal in his last six games - a remarkable scoring record for the English striker after his struggles at the opening of the campaign.

The result ensured that Spurs qualified for the next round of the competition, although Pochettino now has just days to rest and prepare his side for the game against Chelsea on Sunday.

Still, the victory kept up Tottenham’s great run of form, and we collect some of the best images from the game yesterday afternoon.
