The champions have endured their worst start to a domestic campaign after taking just 14 points from 13 matches.
Chelsea have already lost seven matches and have won just four, leaving them in 15th place in the table.
However, back-to-back wins over Norwich and Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Champions League has seen morale raised at Stamford Bridge ahead of this weekend’s crucial derby against in-form Tottenham.
Key players from last season including Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas are finally starting to find some form under Jose Mourinho, who is adamant that no signings need to be made in the January transfer window.
And former England international Mills, who enjoyed a career playing for teams including Manchester City and Leeds, reckons that the Blues are very close to going on a winning run which could thrust them back into the race for a Champions League finish.
He told Sportlobster: “Sooner or later Chelsea are going to hammer someone. Hazard will find form, Costa will score a hat-trick and every team going to Stamford Bridge will be praying ‘please, not us.’
“They have a great manager and a fantastic squad of players, it’s simply a matter of time.
“Everyone’s saying ‘well, they’re out of it, there’s no way they can make the top four’, but when I was at Leeds we were 15th at Christmas and finished 4th so it’s possible.
“Four wins from five games and they would be back on track.”
