Report: Daryl Janmaat or Georginio Wijnaldum could take over Newcastle United captaincy

Steve McClaren is said to be close to stripping Fabricio Coloccini of the Newcastle United captaincy.

According to a report in the Daily Star, Newcastle United could strip Fabricio Coloccini of the captaincy.

Steve McClaren has reservations over Coloccini wearing the armband, because he feels the Argentine is too quiet.

The former England boss also has not been impressed by the 33-year-old’s form in recent weeks, and he had a frank discussion with the defender on the training ground in midweek.

Coloccini has worn the armband at Newcastle for some time now, but it is thought that McClaren may choose another member of his squad to be his side’s official leader.

The Star believe that McClaren has two potential successors to Coloccini, with Daryl Janmaat and Georginio Wijnaldum the most likely to takeover the captaincy.

Janmaat has been one of Newcastle’s most consistent performers since arriving in 2014, and he has displayed his passion for the club.

Wijnaldum, meanwhile, only joined the Magpies during the summer transfer window, but he has made a positive initial impression – and McClaren has seen leadership qualities in the midfielder.
