Schalke star Joel Matip is in demand ahead of the January transfer window.
According to Calcio Mercato, Schalke defender Joel Matip would be open to joining Newcastle - but may hold out for a move elsewhere.
The Cameroon international, 24, joined Schalke at the age of eight having previously been on the books at another German club, VfL Bochum, and he has now risen up to become a key player for the Gelsenkirchen outfit.
Matip has made almost 250 appearances for Schalke, featuring either at centre back or in holding midfield, but could now look to leave after 15 years with the club.
Calcio Mercato report that Serie A giants AC Milan and Lazio both have an interest in Matip, with the two Italian sides pursuing defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window.
However, it's also stated that Newcastle have had an interest in Matip, and the utility man is happy to make the move to England if the Magpies do make a bid when the transfer window re-opens.
There could be a problem for Steve McClaren's men though, as the report claims that whilst Matip would be open to signing for Newcastle, he is also willing to wait and see whether a more successful club attempt to sign him.
Newcastle are struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League table, and whilst Matip may want a move to English football, he appears to be understandably cautious about joining a club fighting against relegation.
St. James' Park and the outstanding Newcastle fans could tempt Matip in to a move, but McClaren may need results to improve in the coming weeks in order to land his signature in January.
