James Tomkins wants to see West Ham United's progression

West Ham United have made an impressive start to the new season, and currently sit in sixth place.

James Tomkins has told West Ham United’s official site that his side should be aiming to better last season’s 12th-placed finish.

The Hammers have made an impressive start to their campaign, and they currently occupy sixth place in the standings.

However, Tomkins has been keen to quell expectations, and the centre-back says that simply showing some signs of progress will represent a good season.

“We need to continue having a good start to the season,” he said.

“We finished 12th last season and we want to improve on that season. This is the perfect timing to see what direction we want to head in.”

The Premier League is looking more open than ever this season, and there is talk of West Ham qualifying for European competition.

To do so, they will have to improve on their recent showings though, as their performance levels have dipped.

West Ham have lost their last two away matches, and their latest 4-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur was highly disappointing.

West Ham’s next fixture comes on Sunday, when they host West Bromwich Albion at Upton Park.
