Top of their group with 10 points and all but guaranteed to progress to the knockout phase of the UEFA Youth League, Arsenal’s under-19 nevertheless suffered defeat at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb, with an incredible solo goal making all the difference.
Josip Brekalo is a midfielder by trade but after a return of two goals from three appearances in the competition, he’s beginning to make a name for himself.
Still only 17, Brekalo was the star of the show for the Zagreb giants, who upset the odds to pick up a valuable win that puts them level on points with the Gunners.
Arsenal had already beaten the Croatian side on their own patch and were expected to make easy work of the eastern European side in London.
But Dinamo proved to be anything but walkovers.
And it all started with Brekalo’s sensational solo run and finish, early in the second half, which put the away side on course for victory.
Bursting forward down the left flank with the ball, the 17-year-old showed superb skill and vision to not only evade the Arsenal defenders but also cut inside and shoot with superb accuracy low into the net.
The only question now is: Have we seen one of Croatia’s next big talents?
