Sunderland won 1-0 against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the Premier League on Monday night.

Former Birmingham City and Leicester City striker Steve Claridge said on BBC Radio 5 Live that Sunderland defender Patrick van Aanholt was brilliant against Crystal Palace on Monday evening.

The Netherlands international left-back started the Premier League game and played for the entire 90 minutes.

The former Chelsea man took three shots, had a pass accuracy of 68%, put in one cross, attempted two dribbles, won 50% of his tackles and 33% of his headers, and made four interceptions and seven clearances.

Claridge was impressed with Van Aanholt’s performance at Selhurst Park and said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Patrick van Aanholt has been brilliant tonight - his willingness to get forward, the way he has played defensively. He has been criticised a lot this season but he has been superb this evening.”

Jermain Defoe’s goal in the 80th minute was enough for Sunderland to defeat Palace in London on Monday night.

Over the course of the 90 minutes, the Black Cats had 33% of the possession, took 12 shots of which just four were on target, and earned two corners.

Sam Allardyce are third from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with nine points from 13 matches, just a point behind 17th-place Newcastle United.
